Somalee’s work centers around allegories of the intersectionality of craft, medicine and the post-colonial South Asian attachment to embellishment.
Her recent work draws on her practice as an internal medicine doctor: acrylic paintings of organs, referencing anatomy, that become altars to health and disease — their surfaces embellished in the manner of jewellery and clothing in South Asia.
She keeps a studio practice in Oakland, California, alongside practising medicine.
